Home  /  School Life

Wide grounds, full days.

Sport, the arts, the outdoors and more than twenty clubs — the parts of school that children remember.

Sport

A life-long enthusiasm for moving.

Our sporting programme aims to give every child the chance to develop a well-rounded skill set, to challenge themselves, and above all to build an enthusiasm for physical activity as a normal part of life.

Children take part in football, hockey, rugby and rugby sevens, netball, cross country, cricket, athletics, swimming, rounders, tennis and dance. We field teams in each discipline and try to give every child the chance to represent the school in their chosen sport.

Competition itself teaches: hosting an opposition team, conducting yourself properly at other venues, looking after your kit, thanking the referee at the end. These are opportunities to grow into a well-rounded person.

Despite being a relatively small school, many Musikili children go on to achieve regional and national honours in their senior years. One Old Musikilian, David Denton, represented the Scottish national rugby team in 2015.

Arts & culture

Something different, for everyone.

Our extra-curricular programme includes cultural activities offered as seasonal options during the school year, for both boys and girls, with a wide variety of clubs to suit every child.

Clubs give children the chance to try something new in a relaxed environment: art, dance, music, photography, sewing, origami, board games, coding, mountain biking, birding, fishing, trail running and more.

School productions are a highlight of the year, bringing the whole school together on stage — and the audience to its feet.

Outdoor education

The bush is a classroom.

Every grade leaves the campus: farms and rivers, mountains and bush camps. Trips build independence as much as knowledge.

Grade 1 children watching a flock of sheep with their guide at Cisera Farm
Grade 1

Cisera & Newlands Farms

A day out in Mazabuka: strolling around Cisera Farm, milking dairy cows — a first for most of the class — and meeting baby donkeys, goats, sheep and a collection of birds.

Then on to Newlands for seed sorting and packing, food mixers and weaning calves, before hay-bale races, a picnic and a run through the sprinkler to cool off.

Grade 2 pupils at the waterhole at Kushiya Farm at sunrise
Grade 2

Kushiya Farm

A night in tents at Kushiya: a game drive among buck and termites, a combine harvester at work, fresh wheat and sugar cane straight from the field, calves at the dairy and a look at the farm’s solar project.

Campfire and marshmallows under the stars, then a morning at the vet clinic, a horse ride and a lesson in how cream, butter and ice cream are made.

Grade 3 pupils outside their tents at Lotri Bay
Grade 3

Lotri Bay, Lake Kariba

A boat across Lake Kariba from Siavonga to a bay you cannot see until you are almost inside it.

Days of swimming, a hard mountain hike with the lake laid out below, fishing, team-building and evenings around the campfire — then listening to baboons, frogs and wind in the trees.

Grade 4 pupils hauling a fishing net at the water at Sinazongwe
Grade 4

Sinazongwe & Lake Kariba

Six hours up the Maamba road into the valley: first-time fishing, bananas and banana bread, crocodiles fed at close range, and a boat cruise past kudu, impala and hippo.

The class joined a harvest crew one morning and finished the job in record time — earning the workers two days off.

Grade 5 pupils in the dam at Firefly Eco Lodge
Grade 5

Firefly Eco Lodge

Three days in the Miombo Forest at Firefly, split into Zebras, Honey Badgers and Fish Eagles: mud bricks, bees under a microscope, the “Rescue Mr Isaac” obstacle course, grass skirts, archery, doba-doba fishing and mokoro races.

Survival skills — purifying water, pitching a tent, filleting a fish, building a stretcher — then trebuchets, a water-balloon battle and campfire songs under a full moon.

Grade 6 pupils and their guide at sunset on the Mapunga bush camp game drive
Grade 6

Mapunga Bush Camp, Kafue

A week in the Kafue bush at Mapunga — for most of the class a first taste of real wilderness. Talks on birdlife and nocturnal animals, fishing lessons, fritters cooked in the open-air kitchen and a football match against the camp staff.

Bush walks tracking leopard, hyena and buffalo by spoor, the difference between browsers and grazers, a mud-run obstacle course, and game drives that turned up all of the Big Four. The class landed more than 200 fish between them.

Pupils on the boat on the Chongwe River during the Grade 7 trip
Grade 7

Lower Zambezi

Five nights camping on the banks of the Chongwe River — the highlight of many pupils’ time at Musikili. Some children see elephant, hippo or catch a fish for the first time.
