Grade 6 trip to
Ndubaluba
The Ndubaluba trip is,
without doubt, the highlight of the Grade Six year. The children change
dramatically in the space of five crammed days and they probably grow more
in the one week than in the rest of the year put together. The aims of the
course are to do with leadership skills and team building, but much more
than this is achieved. It is the personal growth of each individual that
always surprises me. They discover themselves as they are nudged out of
their comfort zones and they also get a brand new perspective on each
other. The atmosphere in the classroom after the trip is always very, very
different and the change is always for the better.
The children are kept
extremely busy with a wide variety of exciting and challenging activities.
The Ropes Course, Jacob’s Ladder, The Climbing Wall, The Adventure
Challenge Race, Initiative Tests, Orienteering, Clay Work, Solitaire, The
Faith Pole, Camp Out, Canoeing, Wide Games and many other activities fill
the week with triumphs and memories that will last forever.
Madalitso Mwale wrote this account of her stay
Ndubaluba was
great!
You won’t
believe what we got up to! When we got to Ndubaluba I was so surprised. I
thought we were going to stay at some king of bushy place not too fancy
not too shabby but just right for the bush. But this place was beyond
that……. It was perfect!! The dorms were complete with bunk-beds, single
beds, mosquito nets and last but not least a cupboard to put or hang our
stuff in the toilets were ok, they had 2 showers, a big basin that we used
as a tub and pit latrine as a toilet!!!!!!!!!!!!
We did all sorts
of activities but the one I thought was the best was the faith pole.
The faith pole
is 2 pieces of wood connected together by rope. It was very hard and scary
climbing the faith pole because it was wobbling and I’m very scared of
heights but I managed to get to the top. As I was about to come down the
rope pullers pulled the rope too tight and eventually they pulled me of
the platform!
From my point of
view I really enjoyed Ndubaluba and if you go there I’m sure you will like
it too!
Mark Wood said;
We had a fantastic time at Ndubaluba . My team
won over all. It tested me in a lot of ways and got the fear out of me I
really enjoyed it.
Jade Pinkney:
I had a very
good time at Ndubaluba, some good times and some
times when I got really scared. For example I got really scared doing the
wall and faith pole.
My favourite
activity was definitely the Jacobs Ladder, though. I enjoyed it because
you had to work as a team and you can’t leave people behind.
Grade 5 trip to
Treetops
The Grade Five Field
Trip to Treetops which is in the Kafue National Park took place from 16th
to 21st October 2007. The Kafue National Park is the largest park in
Zambia, the third largest in Africa and the fifth largest in the world.
Treetops is a schools’ camp situated in the northern part of the Kafue N.P.
It is on the banks of the Lufupa River and is a fine place to see
wildlife. The camp is called ‘Treetops’ because of the enormous baobab
tree at the campsite. The baobab tree is hundreds of years old and it is
so big that as many as twenty five children are needed to encircle it at
the base.
Pre-trip preparations
which consisted of lead-in lessons on the flora and fauna of the park
added to the mounting sense of excitement. As we travelled to the park,
the exuberant party of ten girls and thirteen boys nattered away with the
chatter only subsiding after entering the park. We were lucky to view
elephants and a good number of antelope species on our way. We arrived at
Treetops as dusk was falling.
During our stay at the
camp, we followed the tried and tested pattern of previous years. The
children spent their time involved in a multitude of activities that were
designed to be stimulating, challenging, informative, exciting and most of
all - fun. The boat ride on the Kafue and Lufupa Rivers was a new
activity which was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.
The drive to the
Busanga Plains proved something of an anticlimax. We had started late and
it got rapidly hotter and dusty. We did a quick circuit of the plains and
then headed back to camp. Although we did not see cats we had fine views
of wildebeest and zebra and we also identified several birds on our bird
list.
The sighting of two
lions on our last game drive was exhilarating. Lions had remained elusive
on our earlier game drives, so this encounter could hardly have been
better; it was an apt highlight of the day.
The children had a profoundly
rewarding experience and feel privileged to have been provided an
opportunity to observe our great variety wild animals and plants.

comments:
The grade fives went
to treetops last week and I want to tell you what my favourite thing about
it was.
I liked the game
drives and the fear factor, except the part where you had to put impala
dung in your mouth and spit it out.
I also liked listening
to the early morning animal and bird sounds and seeing all the animals, we
saw lots of herds of impala and puku we also saw two male lions hunting.
But my favourite part of treetops was
the boat ride, we saw two or three pods of hippopotamus and seven albino
crocs. I must admit I was just a little bit frightened when the boat
engine started and we started to move but I got
used to it.
When it was time to
leave treetops one side of me wanted to stay there and at the same time go
back home, but we were going to leave anyway and there was nothing I could
do to stop us going back to Lusaka. But I was relieved to see my family
back home.

My
favourite thing about Treetops was the fear
factor, where we had to pick up a spoon from the
bottom of a dustbin with lots of fish in
and spit impala dung!!!

of animals like lion elephants, hippo, crocodiles.
Affan Kazi
The
favourite thing I did in Treetops was the Fear Factor,
it was revolting. We had to spit impala dung,
then we had to get a spoon while there was a dead fish,
2 small catfish and one giant catfish, then you had to
kiss the giant catfish and the final one was to run to the toilets in the
night and back.
Athena Wood
We
all had a great time on our annual Treetops trip but my favourite parts
were the evening we got there, the Pop Idols, Fear Factor, Fashion Show,
Talent Show and also the Game Drives and Boat Trip.
Callum Burke
My favourite thing was fear factor & the game
drives & walks in the bush
.
Ross Crawford
My best part of treetops is when we
played fear factor. I really enjoyed it because it was
a challenge and at times scary. I would do it again if we could.
Colin Miller
As you know every year grade five goes there
for the yearly trip. I was picked up at Barclays
bank at 06 am. It was a long drive to
Lusaka to pick up the children who live there.
We then stopped at Ross Crawford’s farm to pick
him up and for a bite of breakfast. After that
we were off again. We entered Nalusanga gate at around two
o’clock. From there it took us until fiveish to
the camp, accounting for stops to peer at animals. Then
we showered and went to bed.
Jonathan Jayes

My favourite
thing I did at treetops camp is when stopped to see hippopotamus
and it was also fun when we did fear factor at night.
We went for a boat ride. The trip
was fun.
Sonia Nair
My favourite part of
treetops was seeing the lion.
Shayne Kilburn
My best part of treetops was the fear
factor. It was really fun and I really enjoyed it.
First of all we had to spit impala dung over a line. After that we
had to reach into a bin with a
barble along with different types of fish, to
get a teaspoon. Then we had to kiss A
barble and the last stunt were to run, at night,
to the girls’ toilet and back.

My favourite part at treetops was the fear
factor. First we had to spit impala dung. I came third. Then we had to
stick our hand in and get a spoon into a dustbin with barble
and pike. Then we did a scary one. You had to run to the staff bathroom. I
came fourth. It was a lovely trip.
